Work injury in the UAE: medical care, pay and compensation

The employer pays all treatment. You get full pay for up to six months and half pay for six more. Permanent total disability or death is compensated at 24 months of basic salary, between AED 18,000 and 200,000.

If you are injured at work in the UAE, your employer pays all your treatment, you keep full pay for up to six months and half pay for six more, and permanent disability or death is compensated at 24 months of basic salary, within AED 18,000 to 200,000.

What counts as a work injury

Any occupational injury or illness in the schedule to Cabinet Resolution No. 33 of 2022, or any other injury suffered while working or because of the work. It includes accidents on the way to or from work, as long as you did not interrupt or change your usual route.

Treatment and pay

  • The employer pays the full cost of treatment until you recover or a disability is confirmed: hospital stays, surgery, tests, medicine, rehabilitation, prosthetics and transport to medical facilities.
  • Full pay for up to six months of treatment, then half pay for up to six more.

Compensation

Outcome Compensation
Permanent total disability 24 months of basic salary, not less than AED 18,000 and not more than AED 200,000
Permanent partial disability The disability percentage in the official schedule × 24 months of basic salary, within the same range
Death 24 months of basic salary to the family, within the same range, plus end-of-service benefits and other dues

The employer’s duties

  • Report the injury to the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation within 48 hours.
  • Pay compensation within 10 days of receiving the medical report.

When compensation can be refused

If it is proven that the injury was deliberate, happened under the influence of alcohol or drugs, came from intentionally breaking posted safety instructions, or that you refused examination or treatment.

An illness that is not work-related falls under ordinary sick leave.
