Al Ain is the oasis city of the Abu Dhabi emirate, close to the border with Oman, and the place to see the UAE’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site. Go for a working date-palm oasis, restored mud-brick forts and the drive up Jebel Hafit. It is about 90 minutes by road from Dubai or Abu Dhabi, and several main sights are free.

What makes Al Ain worth the trip

Al Ain feels nothing like the coast. Instead of towers and malls, you get palm groves, forts built from sun-dried mud brick, Bronze Age tombs and a mountain on the Oman border.

In 2011 UNESCO recognised the cultural sites of Al Ain as the UAE’s first World Heritage Site. According to Visit Abu Dhabi and Visit Al Ain, the listing covers the Jebel Hafit Desert Park area and Qasr Al Muwaiji, and Al Ain Oasis is part of it too. In 2026 the city is also being promoted as Arab Tourism Capital.

Al Ain belongs to Abu Dhabi, not Dubai. To browse places across the emirate, see our Abu Dhabi directory.

Getting to Al Ain from Dubai

By car: take the E66 Dubai–Al Ain Road. Al Ain Zoo puts the drive at around 90 minutes, depending on traffic.

By public bus: intercity buses leave from Dubai’s Al Ghubaiba Bus Station or Al Aweer Bus Station and take about two hours, according to Al Ain Zoo’s getting-here page. Abu Dhabi Mobility lists route E201 between Al Ain Main Bus Station and Dubai at AED 25. In Al Ain, you buy tickets at the Customer Happiness Offices in the station. The timetable belongs to Dubai’s RTA, so check times on rta.ae before you travel.

If this is your first trip to the UAE, read our first-time in Dubai guide as well. Most of the basics apply here too.

Getting to Al Ain from Abu Dhabi

By car: the E22 and E66 both connect Abu Dhabi with Al Ain. Expect a drive of around one hour 30 minutes.

By public bus: Abu Dhabi Mobility runs intercity trips between Abu Dhabi and Al Ain every hour, every day. A regular ticket costs AED 30 and a premium ticket AED 40. You buy them at the Customer Happiness Offices in the station. The timetable is a PDF on the Abu Dhabi Mobility intercity page, and the enquiry line is 80022739.

Al Ain Zoo’s own page also lists a complimentary Al Ain Zoo Express shuttle. Check the zoo website for pick-up points and times.

Route Option What the official source says

Getting around once you arrive

The sights are spread across the city, and the summit of Jebel Hafit can only be reached by car, motorbike or bicycle. A car or taxi saves a lot of time.

  • Taxis: call TransAD on 600535353 or use the Abu Dhabi Taxi app.
  • City buses: you need a Hafilat card. Visit Al Ain lists AED 10 for the basic card, AED 30 for a weekly pass and AED 80 for a monthly pass.
  • Shuttle: an Al Ain shuttle bus links malls and attractions.

Al Ain Oasis

Shaded paths run between the palms, and the falaj channels still carry water. Visit Al Ain notes that the water level can vary with the season. The Eco-Centre explains how the irrigation system works, so start there if you want to understand what you are walking through.

The two forts

Al Jahili Fort was built as a residence for the ruling Al Nahyan family. Alongside the Thesiger exhibition it has a temporary exhibition gallery, and the Jahili Mosque from the same period stands nearby.

Qasr Al Muwaiji became the home of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the UAE’s founding father, when he became the Ruler’s Representative in the Al Ain region in 1946. Its exhibition follows the site from its archaeological origins to modern times, and explains why water mattered so much to life in the oases. Visit Al Ain suggests about an hour for each fort.

Jebel Hafit

Visit Abu Dhabi points to the summit for sunrise and sunset views over Al Ain. The road up is the main experience, so plan it for the end of the day. The Desert Park at the foot of the mountain offers camping, either with your own equipment or in serviced tents.

Free things to do

  • Walk Al Ain Oasis: there is no entry fee, and it is open daily from 9am to 7pm.
  • Visit Qasr Al Muwaiji: entry is free, and guided tours are offered.
  • Browse Souq Al Qattara: it is free to enter and open daily from 9am to 8pm, according to Visit Al Ain.

Al Ain with children

Al Ain Zoo is the obvious family stop. Children under 3 and People of Determination enter free. You can bring a stroller and your own food and drinks, and there are picnic areas. Wheelchairs are available free of charge.

The zoo asks that children are supervised at all times. It also asks visitors not to feed or touch animals unless zoo staff are supervising, not to smoke (including e-cigarettes) and not to use flash photography.

Visit Al Ain’s family list also includes Green Mubazzarah Park for picnics, Al Ain Adventure for whitewater rafting and ziplining, Hili Fun City and the Al Ain Camel Market. Hili Archaeological Park has a children’s play area.

How many days, and a sample day

  1. Morning: Al Jahili Fort, which opens at 9am.
  2. Late morning: Al Ain Oasis and the Eco-Centre (allow about two hours).
  3. Afternoon: Qasr Al Muwaiji, open until 7pm, then Souq Al Qattara.
  4. Sunset: drive up Jebel Hafit.

Opening hours change during Ramadan, so check before you set out.
