Dubai has a reputation for costing money the moment you step outside. It is half true — the headline attractions are expensive, but a surprising amount of the best of the city is free, including the two things most visitors remember afterwards.
Here is everything genuinely worth doing in Dubai that costs nothing, checked in August 2026.
1. The Dubai Fountain
Choreographed water jets on the lake between Dubai Mall and Burj Khalifa, every 30 minutes through the evening. It is the single best free thing in the city.
Where to stand: the Souk Al Bahar bridge. It is free, closer than most of the paid terraces, and the angle is better. Arrive 15 minutes early for a spot on the railing.
2. Cross the Creek by abra
Technically AED 1, so not quite free — but for one dirham you get a wooden boat across Dubai Creek, the same way people have crossed it for generations. Five minutes, and better than most paid boat tours.
3. Al Fahidi and the old quarter
Wind-tower lanes, courtyards and galleries in the oldest surviving part of Dubai. Free to walk, and the only place in the city that feels genuinely old.
Go early. There is almost no shade and by midday it is punishing.
4. The Gold and Spice Souks
Free to wander, and no obligation to buy. The Gold Souk is a covered lane of jewellery shops; the Spice Souk beside it sells saffron, frankincense and dried lemon out of open sacks. Together they are a good hour.
5. The public beaches
All of Dubai’s main beaches are free and properly maintained, with showers and changing rooms.
- Kite Beach — the best equipped, with a running track and food trucks behind it
- JBR — beach plus promenade, busiest in the evening
- Sunset Beach (Umm Suqeim) — the classic Burj Al Arab photo spot
Between June and September the sand is too hot to walk on before about 5pm. Plan around that.
6. The Palm Jumeirah boardwalk
An 11 km walk at sea level around the outer crescent of the Palm, looking back at the Marina skyline. Free, open all day, and best at sunset.
7. The Dubai Marina promenade
A 7 km walkway around the Marina, past the yachts and under the towers. Free, flat, and pleasant in the evening. Connects to JBR at one end.
8. Window-shopping the mega-malls
Free to enter, air-conditioned, and useful in summer:
- Dubai Mall — you can see the main aquarium tank from the public walkway without paying
- Mall of the Emirates — the Ski Dubai viewing gallery costs nothing
9. Jumeirah Mosque from the outside
One of the most photographed buildings in the city, and free to look at. The guided interior visit costs a small fee and is worth it if you have the time.
10. The Dubai Fountain boardwalk and Burj Park
Beyond the fountain itself, the lakeside boardwalk and Burj Park give you the classic Burj Khalifa view from the ground for nothing — which, for a lot of people, is the photograph they actually wanted.
11. Alserkal Avenue, Al Quoz
A converted warehouse district of independent galleries and studios. Entry to the galleries is free. It is the closest Dubai gets to a contemporary arts quarter, and it is almost entirely missed by visitors.
12. Watch the planes at Al Mamzar or the Creek
Free public parks along the Creek and at Al Mamzar are where Dubai families actually spend their weekends. Small entry fees apply to some; the Creek-side stretches are free.
