Sharjah Space and Astronomy Hub
About Sharjah Space and Astronomy Hub
The Sharjah Space and Astronomy Hub (SSAH) is the University of Sharjah’s centre for astronomy and space science in University City, Sharjah. It is for students, researchers, schools and members of the public interested in the Sharjah Planetarium, the observatories and the university’s space projects.
What the hub is
SSAH grew out of the Sharjah Center for Astronomy and Space Sciences, which opened on 7 May 2015. The university lists these facilities:
- the Sharjah Planetarium, recently revamped and modernised;
- optical and radio observatories;
- laboratories.
The hub carries out research and astronomical observation, holds conferences and outreach events, and runs space projects, including the CubeSat Sharjah-Sat 1, launched on 3 January 2023, and Sharjah-Sat 2. It also lists a proposed Al Qasimi Radio-Optical Observatory on Jebel Al-Kitab.
The Sharjah Planetarium
When the Ruler of Sharjah opened the revamped planetarium, the university said the original dome, built in 2015, had an inner diameter of more than 18 metres and could hold more than 200 people. The new system pairs eight main projectors, supporting 4K and 8K images, with an upgraded Japanese Mega Star optical star projector, and adds laser show equipment. Five new films for all ages joined the eight earlier shows:
- The Birth of the Earth
- Towards Mars: Towards a New Horizon
- Beyond the Sun
- Hunting Dark Matter: The Cosmic Ghost
- Astronomy by Colossal Dimensions
The university says the planetarium is meant for students and the public, and will also host conferences and visiting space scientists.
