Louvre Abu Dhabi is a museum on Saadiyat Island that Visit Abu Dhabi describes as the first universal museum in the Arab world. An adult ticket costs AED 70, under-18s enter free, and the galleries open at 10am, closing at 6:30pm Monday to Thursday and 8:30pm Friday to Sunday, according to the museum’s website.

This is the detailed visit guide. For how the Louvre fits into a wider trip to the capital, see our Abu Dhabi visitor guide.

What Louvre Abu Dhabi is

The museum is built around one idea: that civilisations have always had more in common than in conflict. Its galleries walk through a shared human story across time, with the museum’s own collection shown alongside loans from three French institutions: the Musée du Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay and the Centre Pompidou.

According to Visit Abu Dhabi, the permanent and temporary galleries cover 9,200 square metres.

The building and the dome

The building was designed by Jean Nouvel, a Pritzker Prize winner. Its centrepiece is a silver dome 180 metres wide, weighing about 7,500 tonnes and made of 7,850 stars arranged in eight layers. Light falling through the layers creates what Nouvel called the “rain of light”. The dome area stays open long after the galleries close, which makes an evening visit worth considering.

Louvre Abu Dhabi opening hours

The museum site says it is open from 10am to midnight, but the galleries and exhibitions keep shorter hours:

Area Days Hours
Galleries and exhibitions Monday to Thursday 10am to 6:30pm
Galleries and exhibitions Friday to Sunday 10am to 8:30pm
Dome Daily Until midnight, last entry 11pm

Last entry to the galleries is 30 minutes before they close.

Check before a Monday visit

The museum’s own pages disagree on Mondays. The plan-your-visit page lists gallery hours from Monday to Thursday, while the museum’s FAQ and Visit Abu Dhabi both still say the museum is closed on Mondays. If Monday is your only free day, confirm on the official site or with the museum before you travel.

The museum recommends booking tickets in advance on its website. Visit Abu Dhabi notes that admission includes the Children’s Museum.

The under-18 rule in practice

The free entry is by age: anyone under 18 does not pay. The museum’s pages we checked do not say whether under-18s must be accompanied by an adult or must book a free ticket. If you are bringing teenagers on their own or a school-age group, book the adult tickets online and check the booking flow for free child tickets, or ask the museum.

The Children’s Museum

The Children’s Museum runs its own exhibitions for younger visitors. The current one, listed in the museum’s FAQ, is Picturing the Cosmos, spread across three floors. Exhibitions change, so check what is on before promising it to the children.

Getting to Louvre Abu Dhabi

From Dubai

  • Cultural Express (free): a free round-trip shuttle from Dubai to Abu Dhabi that serves two stops only, Louvre Abu Dhabi and Qasr Al Watan. Pick-up points and times are in the timetable on the Saadiyat Island transport page.
  • By car: the museum’s directions say to take the Saadiyat Island / Yas Island exit onto Sheikh Khalifa Highway E12, drive along Yas Highway to the Cultural District and follow signs to Louvre Abu Dhabi.
  • By train: since 30 September 2026, Etihad Rail links Dubai Station with Mohamed Bin Zayed City Station in Abu Dhabi in about 57 minutes. The station is on the mainland, so you still need a taxi to Saadiyat.

Within Abu Dhabi

  • City bus 94 serves the museum.
  • Experience Abu Dhabi Shuttle Bus: a free service on eight routes linking Yas Island, Saadiyat Island, the city centre, Jubail Island and the Grand Canal area. Scan the QR code when you board; route maps are on Visit Abu Dhabi.
  • Water taxi: from Marsa Mina, Abu Dhabi Port’s cruise terminal, to the museum, with tickets sold online.

Parking

There is paid valet parking, and a drop-off and pick-up point in front of the main entrance at the visitor car park. Visitor parking is open from 7am to midnight, with no overnight parking.

How much time you need

Visit Abu Dhabi suggests two to three hours for the museum, longer if you want to look closely. Add the dome at the end of the day if you can.

The museum sits in Saadiyat Cultural District with Zayed National Museum, Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi and Manarat Al Saadiyat. Visit Abu Dhabi suggests one to two hours per attraction and at least two full days to cover the district properly.

A simple half-day plan

  1. Book an adult ticket online and arrive after 10am.
  2. Do the galleries first, while you are fresh, and leave the Children’s Museum for after lunch if you have children with you.
  3. Stay for the dome as the light changes. On Friday to Sunday the galleries stay open until 8:30pm, which gives you more time.

Rules worth knowing before you go

  • Bags and backpacks, other than small handbags, are not allowed in the galleries. Use the cloakroom.
  • No food or drink inside the galleries.
  • Strollers and wheelchairs are available next to the cloakroom, first come, first served.
  • Commercial filming and photography, including drones, are prohibited without prior approval.
