UAE overstay fine: AED 50 a day, grace periods and how to pay

If you stay in the UAE after your permitted stay ends, or after your entry visa or residence permit is cancelled or expires, the fine is AED 50 for each day, according to the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP). The same daily rate now applies to visit, tourist and residence visas; for residence visas it used to be AED 25.

The official fees

After paying, you must either regularise your status or leave the UAE, which is ICP’s condition for the service.

Grace periods

You are not fined the day a residence permit ends. The government portal says residents are granted flexible grace periods of up to 6 months, depending on their category, to stay in the country after the residence permit is cancelled or expires. The portal does not publish the period for each category, so check yours with ICP, or GDRFA if your visa is from Dubai, before you plan around it.

Your Emirates ID expires with your visa, so renew both together. If you need to renew the visa one to six months early because you are travelling, ICP’s permission is needed first.

Staying outside the UAE for more than 6 months

This is a separate rule. A residence visa is cancelled automatically if you stay outside the UAE for more than 180 days in a row, with exceptions such as foreign wives of Emirati citizens and residents abroad for approved medical treatment. To return on the same residence, you apply from abroad for a re-entry permit with a valid reason and pay AED 100 for every 30 days or part of 30 days spent outside. Once approved, you must enter within 30 days. The portal notes this service is not for Dubai residents, and Golden Visa and green residence holders do not need it.

How to check and pay the fine

• ICP: the “Payment of visa or residence violation fine” service on the ICP website and app, with UAE Pass. ICP lists a completion time of 2 days. Call centre: 600 522 222.
• Dubai visas: through GDRFA Dubai’s fine collection service.

Worked example

If your grace period has ended and you stay 20 more days, the fine is 20 × AED 50 = AED 1,000, plus AED 100 if you pay through the smart services.
