Can I use Uber in Dubai?

Yes. Uber operates legally in Dubai, and so does Careem, the local app that usually has more cars. Both work the way you expect. The only real question is whether either is worth the premium over a metered taxi, and often it is not.

What it costs against a taxi

Expect 10 to 30 percent above the metered fare, and more during surge at peak arrival and departure times. What you buy for that is a price fixed before you get in, card payment inside the app, and a driver who already has your destination.

Official Dubai taxis are metered, regulated, tracked and all take cards. There is nothing to negotiate and no reason to distrust the meter, which removes most of the usual reasons to prefer an app abroad.

At the airport

Both operate at DXB, but pickup is from a designated ride-hailing area rather than the taxi rank, so allow an extra five minutes of walking with your bags. The taxi rank is right outside arrivals and is staffed around the clock.

Careem versus Uber

Careem is the regional app and generally has better coverage in Dubai, including at the airport. It also handles more than rides. If you are installing one, install Careem; if you already have Uber, it will work.

When an app is genuinely better

• Late at night in a quiet residential area, where flagging a taxi takes longer than opening an app.
• When you cannot explain the destination — a specific tower, a building name, an address the driver may not know.
• When you want the price fixed before a long trip in heavy traffic.

When to skip both

In daylight, on the Red Line, travelling light — the Metro costs AED 3–7.50 and beats every car in Sheikh Zayed Road traffic.
