Can I use Uber in Dubai?

Yes. Dubai Airports lists Uber, Careem and Bolt as DXB options. An app is not one universal tariff: distinguish an official taxi from the ride product shown in the app, then compare price, pickup location and payment before confirming.

How app rides work in Dubai

Booking a car by app in Dubai gets you one of two things, and it helps to know which:

• An official taxi, booked electronically (e-hail). It runs on RTA’s taxi fares. RTA set up a joint venture with Careem in 2019 to run e-hail bookings for Dubai taxis, and Dubai Taxi lists Bolt, Careem and RTA’s own S’hail app as ways to book its cars.
• A limousine booked by app. RTA kept this e-hail limousine market open to licensed operators. The app shows you the price before you confirm.

Both are big: RTA reported that 45% of taxi trips in 2025 were booked through digital platforms, and the e-hail limousine sector carried 41 million trips that year, up from 32.8 million in 2024.

What an app-booked taxi costs

DTC’s regular street-hail tariff starts at AED 5 by day or AED 5.50 overnight, while app-booked taxis have different starting charges. That does not guarantee Uber is cheaper or dearer: match the ride product and price terms, and use the separate airport tariff for airport pickup.

A worked example

Arithmetic only: Using the regular DTC tariff above, 10 km plus 4 minutes of waiting and an AED 9 start equals AED 35.50; with an AED 5 start it equals AED 31.50. The AED 4 difference is this example, not an Uber or airport quote, and excludes tolls or special-event tariffs.

At the airport

RTA fitted payment terminals in its entire taxi fleet in 2019, so a hailed taxi takes bank cards, nol and Apple Pay or Samsung Pay, and cash too. In an app, you pay the way the app is set up. Small cash is still useful elsewhere; see whether you need cash in Dubai.

When an app makes sense, and when it does not

• Use an app late at night in a quiet residential area, when you cannot explain the destination (a tower or building name), or when you want to see the price before a long trip.
• Compare first: If a street taxi is available, compare its tariff and service with the app quote; the starting charge alone does not establish the total trip price.
