Do I need to rent a car in Dubai?

No — not if you stay near the Metro. A visitor doing the standard Dubai trip can cover all of it on the Red Line, a handful of taxis and one tour pickup. Renting only starts to make sense if you are leaving the city.

Why you probably do not need one

The Red Line runs from inside the airport terminals along Sheikh Zayed Road through Downtown, Business Bay, Al Barsha, the Marina and out to Expo City. The Green Line loops through old Dubai. A trip costs AED 3–7.50, and in Sheikh Zayed Road traffic at 08:00 or 18:00 nothing on wheels will beat it.

Where the Metro does not reach, taxis are metered, regulated and everywhere, and all of them take cards.

What driving actually costs you

• Salik, the road toll, is charged per gate crossed and the main routes cross several.
• Parking at the big attractions fills at weekends, and leaving Global Village or Miracle Garden after closing can take an hour.
• Fines are automated and enforced, and reach the rental company after you have flown home.
• Drink-driving enforcement is absolute — there is no permitted level. If your evening includes a bar, the car is a liability.

When a car is the right call

• You are visiting more than one emirate — Hatta, Fujairah’s east coast, Ras Al Khaimah’s mountains.
• You are travelling with small children and a lot of equipment, where taxi-hopping becomes genuinely tiring.

The middle option

Rent for the one or two days you actually need it and use the Metro for the rest. Daily hire for a short stretch usually costs less than the taxis it saves on a long day trip, and none of the parking and toll friction applies on the days you do not have it.
