Camps usually offer camel rides, falconry, henna, sandboarding and refreshments; the budget evening trip Visit Dubai lists lasts about six hours and includes a barbecue dinner and entertainment. Why the evening safari and not the morning one

The morning trip gives you dune driving and sandboarding and has you back by lunchtime: no dinner, no camp evening, no sunset. Take it only if your evenings are already booked. Both run year-round, and Visit Dubai notes that winter is peak season.

What to refuse, and what is fine

• Extras you have not priced. Quad bikes and other add-ons are often charged on top. Ask the price before you agree.
• Paying again for sandboarding. Many safaris include it — check your booking before handing over money.
• Fine as included: the short camel ride and henna are standard parts of most camps.

How to avoid the bad version

1. Book a licensed operator. Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) licenses desert camps, and safari drivers are trained and certified under its supervision. Visit Dubai’s advice is to book with a reputable tour company and never drive into the desert yourself.
2. Ask which camp and which area. Some trips go to the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, which admits visitors only through approved, licensed operators; others go to areas such as Al Marmoom.

Who should not do dune driving

• Pregnant women, and anyone with pre-existing medical conditions — including heart, neck or back problems — should not take part.

• The experience is not wheelchair accessible.
