How many days do you need in Dubai?

Three is enough to see the Dubai everyone comes for and still have one afternoon that feels like yours. Five is comfortable. Anything less than two and you are choosing between the two halves of the city rather than seeing both.

What each length gets you

Two days

Burj Khalifa and the Fountain on the first evening, then old Dubai — Al Fahidi, the abra across the Creek, the souks — on the second. Skip Dubai Frame and skip the desert. You will have seen the two things people remember.

Three days

The same, plus a desert safari evening and a morning on a beach. This is the standard trip and it works: Downtown on day one, old Dubai on day two, desert and beach on day three. Our costed version is the three-day itinerary.

Five days

Adds room for the things that get cut — a full day at a water park or Global Village in season, a proper afternoon in a mall in summer, a day trip to Abu Dhabi, and a day with nothing planned.

A week or more

You will run out of headline sights and start seeing the city instead — Alserkal Avenue, Al Mamzar, the northern emirates. That is a better holiday, but it is not what most people mean by “doing Dubai”.

The thing that decides it is not time

It is geography. Dubai is roughly 40 km end to end, and a badly ordered day puts you in a taxi for two hours. Three well-grouped days beat five scattered ones. Group each day by area and you will fit more into three days than a careless traveller fits into six.

And the season

Between June and September the outdoor half of any plan collapses — afternoons of 40–45°C are not workable. In those months the same three days need rebuilding around indoor attractions and evenings. See the best time to visit Dubai.
