Things to Do

What to do in Dubai in summer, when it is 45°C outside

A Dubai summer trip that works — the indoor attractions, hotel pool day passes, and the before-9am-after-6pm rule residents live by.

Between June and September, Dubai’s afternoon temperature sits between 40 and 45°C with heavy coastal humidity. Outdoor sightseeing is not merely uncomfortable in those months — for a few hours a day it is genuinely unwise. But the city was built for exactly this problem, and a summer trip works perfectly well if you plan it the way residents do.

The rule residents live by

Outdoors before 09:00 and after 18:00. Indoors in between. That is the whole strategy. Everything below fills the middle of the day.

The big indoor attractions

Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo

Inside Dubai Mall. The main tank is visible free from the public walkway — the paid ticket gets you the tunnel and the zoo above: AED 199 for the Silver pass (AED 169 for UAE residents), AED 269 for Gold and AED 399 for Platinum on the official site.

Ski Dubai

Real snow at Mall of the Emirates. Slope passes are sold on Ski Dubai’s website (prices include 5% VAT, and the slope pass is for skill level 2 and up); the viewing gallery is free if you only want the novelty.

Burj Khalifa

Air-conditioned throughout, and summer is the quietest season for tickets. ⚠️ Visibility is poorest in summer afternoons — take the earliest morning slot. See our Burj Khalifa ticket guide.

Museum of the Future

Entirely indoors and one of the few genuinely new things in the city, but closed until the first quarter of 2027, when it reopens with new exhibitions, according to its official website.

Theme parks — indoor only

IMG Worlds of Adventure is fully indoor and is the summer default for families. Motiongate and Legoland are largely outdoor — avoid them in July and August.

Water, which counts as indoor in summer

  • Aquaventure at Atlantis and Wild Wadi — water parks work in summer precisely because you are in the water. Go at opening; the walkways get very hot by midday.
  • Hotel pools. Many Dubai hotels sell day passes to non-guests, often including some food and drink credit; prices vary by hotel. This is one of the best summer value options and almost no visitor knows about it.

The malls, used properly

Dubai’s malls are civic infrastructure in summer, not just shopping. Beyond the two giants:

  • Ibn Battuta Mall — themed courts, genuinely interesting architecture, on the Metro
  • Dubai Hills Mall and Nakheel Mall — newer, far less crowded
  • City Walk and Boxpark — open-air but heavily shaded and misted; workable from late afternoon

Culture and quiet

  • Etihad Museum — the founding of the UAE, well designed and rarely busy
  • Alserkal Avenue, Al Quoz — warehouse galleries, free entry, air-conditioned
  • Coffee Museum and the small museums in Al Fahidi — small, indoor and cheap
  • Dubai Frame — the walkway is enclosed and air-conditioned

Evening: the city comes back

After sunset everything reopens:

  • The Dubai Fountain — free, every 30 minutes
  • JBR and the Marina promenade — busy and pleasant from about 19:00
  • Kite Beach — the sand is walkable again by early evening
  • The souks — open late and mostly covered

Summer health, briefly

  • Drink far more water than feels necessary — you dehydrate without noticing in air conditioning too
  • Beach sand is hot enough to burn bare feet until evening
  • Car interiors reach dangerous temperatures within minutes
  • The 20 metres between a taxi and a door is where people get caught out — dress for it

The upside nobody mentions

Summer is the cheapest season in Dubai by a wide margin. Hotel rates fall dramatically, attractions are quiet, and restaurants that need booking weeks ahead in January have tables. If your trip is built around indoor plans and evenings, summer is genuinely good value — see the best time to visit.
