Corniche Al Qawasim
About Corniche Al Qawasim
Corniche Al Qawasim is a free public waterfront promenade in Ras Al Khaimah city, about three kilometres long, beside a protected stretch of mangroves. It suits families, walkers, joggers and cyclists, and people looking for an evening meal by the water, with restaurants, cafés, a children’s play area and water activities.
What is on the corniche
The emirate’s tourism site, Visit Ras Al Khaimah, describes a wide walkway lined with apartments, restaurants, local cafés and a children’s play area, with access to water activities. The corniche is named after the Al Qawasim, who controlled regional trade in the 18th century.
- RAK Flagpole: a flagpole rising 120 metres carries the UAE flag, recalling the flag first raised by Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan on 2 December 1971.
- Mangroves: the corniche’s own website says the mangroves are home to wildlife, including flamingos, and lists kayak excursions through them.
- Park and play area: the website lists a park with a children’s area.
- Corniche Ferris Wheel: named on the corniche website, without hours or ticket prices.
Eating and drinking
Visit Ras Al Khaimah says the dining runs from local and Middle Eastern to international food, including fast food and takeaway. Brands named on the corniche website include Costa Coffee, Baskin Robbins, Bosnian Kebab, KFC, Moti Mahal, Corniche Café, BYKY, Debs Loqimat and The Canteen.
Before you go
The corniche website lists complimentary parking. Its opening-hours box says “Open Daily” but shows no real times, so check individual restaurants for their hours. The tourism authority’s Downtown Ras Al Khaimah page tells drivers to take Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road (E311) and follow the signs for City Centre. Enquiries go to the corniche management on +971 7 203 6999 or [email protected].
Good to know
- The tourism authority says the corniche is busiest at weekends and comes alive at night, and suggests arriving before sunset.
- The walkway is wide enough for cyclists and joggers as well as walkers.
- No entry fee is mentioned on either official site.
- Nearby sights listed by Visit Ras Al Khaimah include Saqr Park, the National Museum of Ras Al Khaimah and Dhayah Fort.
