Is tap water safe to drink in Dubai?

Dubai’s mains water is desalinated seawater, and the UAE’s water strategy commits it to World Health Organization standards. Whether the water in your glass is as good depends on the storage tank in your building, which no visitor can check, so most people drink bottled or filtered water and use the tap for everything else.

Where Dubai’s tap water comes from

The UAE has very little natural fresh water, so the government portal names desalination as the key source of water for drinking and domestic use. The country produces about 2.02 billion cubic metres of desalinated seawater a year for the urban sector, from 33 desalination plants. Under the UAE Water Security Strategy 2036, water is supplied in line with local regulations and the standards of the World Health Organization.

So the question is not really whether Dubai’s water is treated to a drinking standard. It is. The question is what happens to it after it leaves the public network.

Why the answer depends on your building

Between the mains and your tap sit the building’s own storage tanks and pipes, and those are the building’s responsibility, not the water utility’s. Dubai Municipality advises cleaning and disinfecting water tanks and plumbing at least every six months, using companies approved by the Municipality, and draining stagnant water to reduce the risk of bacteria.

A well-run hotel or tower follows that schedule. A neglected one may not. As a guest you cannot see the tank or its cleaning record, and that uncertainty, not the desalinated water itself, is why bottled and filtered water are so common in Dubai homes and hotel rooms.

How to decide in your own hotel or apartment

1. Ask. Hotel reception or building management can tell you when the tanks were last cleaned and whether the company is approved by Dubai Municipality.
2. Run the tap first if the room or flat has been empty for a while. The Municipality’s own advice is to drain stagnant water.
3. Look and smell. If water comes out cloudy, discoloured or smelling odd, do not drink it and report it to the building.
4. When in doubt, use bottled water or a filter jug. Both are easy to find in supermarkets and neighbourhood groceries across the city.

If you live in Dubai

Residents have more leverage than visitors. If you rent, ask the landlord or building management for the tank-cleaning schedule, and raise it in writing if water quality is poor. The bigger risk is heat, not the tap

Dubai’s tourism department gives average temperatures of around 41°C in summer and 23°C in winter. In the hot months, the practical danger is not drinking enough. Common mistakes

• Assuming “desalinated” means unsafe. Desalination is how Dubai produces its drinking water; it is not a lower grade.
• Assuming “treated at source” means safe from every tap. The building’s tanks are a separate link in the chain.
• Drinking too little. Worrying about the tap and then under-drinking in 40°C heat is the worse trade.
