Is tap water safe to drink in Dubai?

It is safe at source, and almost nobody drinks it. Both halves of that sentence are true, and the gap between them is the actual answer.

Where the water comes from

Dubai’s tap water is desalinated seawater, treated to a drinking standard and tested continuously. Leaving the plant, it is safe.

Why residents still buy bottles

Between the plant and your tap sits a building’s own storage tank, and those vary. Some are cleaned on schedule and some are not, and there is no way for a guest in a hotel or an apartment to know which. That uncertainty — not the water itself — is why bottled water is universal here.

There is a second reason, which is heat. Water sitting in rooftop tanks and exposed pipes through a Dubai summer arrives warm from the cold tap, sometimes uncomfortably so.

What this means in practice

• Brushing your teeth, washing food, making tea or coffee — tap water is fine and everyone uses it.
• Drinking straight from the tap — technically fine, practically unusual. Nobody will warn you off it, and nobody does it.
• Bottled water is cheap and everywhere. A large bottle costs a couple of dirhams in a supermarket and is included free in most hotel rooms.
• Restaurants will ask whether you want still or sparkling, and both are bottled. Asking for tap water is unusual but not refused.

The thing that actually matters

Drink far more than feels necessary. Between June and September the afternoon reaches 40–45°C with heavy humidity, and dehydration begins before you feel thirsty — including indoors, where the air conditioning dries you out without you noticing.
