About Al Sedra Heritage District

Al Sidra Heritage Neighbourhood (Al Sedra Heritage District) is a restored traditional quarter in the Al Luluiya area of Khorfakkan, on Sharjah’s east coast. It suits visitors interested in local heritage and architecture, and families attending the heritage events that the Sharjah Institute for Heritage holds there.

What the neighbourhood is

According to the Sharjah Government Media Bureau, Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, opened the neighbourhood in November 2021. It was restored as the first phase of restoring the wider Al Luluiya heritage area. It contains:

  • restored family houses, including those of Mohammed bin Salem bin Abdullah Al Naqbi, Mohammed Rashid bin Saif Al Naqbi, Mohammed Rashid Al Othmani Al Naqbi, Rashid Ali Al Naour and Mohammed Rashid Abdullah Al Naqbi;
  • the Khaled bin Al Walid heritage mosque;
  • two majlises.

The bureau says parts of the houses are used as venues for heritage activities and events.

Where the name comes from

The name refers to the Sidr tree, which is common in the region. Residents rested and did light work in its shade and held celebrations under it. The bureau describes the quarter as reflecting the sea, farming and herding life of the area, whose fertile land grew palms, lemons, mangoes, Sidr, Ghaf and Samar trees.

Events held here

The neighbourhood is one of the venues for Sharjah Heritage Days in Khorfakkan, organised by the Sharjah Institute for Heritage. Sharjah24 reported that during the 19th edition in March 2022 it hosted folk games and children’s theatre, including puppet shows, while the opening took place at the Khorfakkan Heritage Village. In March 2023 the Khorfakkan events opened at both the heritage area and Al Sidra Heritage Neighbourhood.
