Jebel Hafeet Mountain
About Jebel Hafeet Mountain
Jebel Hafit (Jebel Hafeet) is a mountain in Al Ain on the border with Oman, and at 1,249 metres it is the highest peak in Abu Dhabi emirate. It is for drivers, cyclists and visitors who want summit views over Al Ain, and for anyone interested in the 5,000-year-old tombs on its slopes.
The mountain
Visit Abu Dhabi describes Jebel Hafit as Abu Dhabi’s highest peak and the UAE’s second tallest. You can reach the summit by car, motorbike or bicycle, and the summit is known for sunrise and sunset photos and views over Al Ain. The name translates as “empty mountain”.
Jebel Hafit Tombs
More than 500 ancient tombs lie on the mountain. Visit Abu Dhabi dates them to about 5,000 years ago and says they mark the beginning of the Bronze Age in the UAE. They were excavated by Danish archaeologists from 1959, at the direction of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. In 2011 UNESCO recognised Jebel Hafit Desert Park as part of the World Heritage Site of Al Ain, the UAE’s first World Heritage Site. Visitors see the tombs on guided hikes organised by Jebel Hafit Desert Park.
Jebel Hafit Desert Park
The park covers a nine-kilometre stretch at the foot of the mountain. The activities listed are hiking, mountain biking, horse riding, camel rides and guided buggy rides. Camping ranges from basic camping with your own equipment to serviced Bedouin-style tents with breakfast and air-conditioned bubble tents. Visit Al Ain gives the park’s hours as daily from 8am to 6pm and its phone number as +971 3 711 8362.
