The Majlis Gallery
About The Majlis Gallery
The Majlis Gallery is a fine art gallery at Al Fahidi Roundabout in the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, Bur Dubai. Opened in 1989, it shows painting, sculpture, ceramics, glass and other work by regional and international artists, and suits visitors to old Dubai and people looking to buy art.
The house and its history
The gallery’s About page explains that Alison Collins came to Dubai in 1976 as an interior designer, and in 1978 she and her husband leased Villa No. 19 in Bastakia, the old wind-tower quarter now known as the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. They raised their family there and hosted many artists in their majlis, which gave the gallery its name. A majlis is a meeting place, and the gallery describes its aim as promoting artists of international standing and being a meeting place for creative people.
