Tipping in Dubai is optional. Visit Dubai, the city’s official tourism site, says there are no set rules for it, and restaurant and hotel bills in the UAE may already include a 10% service charge. Read the bottom of the bill first; if there is no service charge and you were happy, a tip is a thank-you, not an obligation.

What may already be on your bill

The UAE government portal lists the charges that restaurants, hotels, hotel apartments and resorts in the UAE might add. Not every venue charges all of them, which is exactly why the bill is worth reading.

A service charge is the venue’s charge for service. Whether you add anything on top is entirely your decision.

A worked example

You have dinner for two and the food and drinks come to AED 300. If the bill shows a 10% service charge, that line is AED 30, already paid for service. Adding nothing more is normal. If the bill has no service-charge line and the service was good, any tip is up to you.

At the hotel, a stay of five nights at a property charging AED 20 a night in Tourism Dirham adds AED 100 to your bill. That is a government fee, not a tip, and has nothing to do with staff.

Restaurants and cafés

Check the bill for a service charge before deciding. In a small café or cafeteria the same applies: with no set rules, paying the bill is enough. Brunch packages are priced per person.

Taxis and ride-hailing
