Is Dubai safe for solo female travellers?

Yes, and it is a common choice. Dubai is one of the easier cities in the world to travel alone in as a woman: street crime is very low, walking at night is ordinary, and the transport is metered, tracked and regulated. The things to know are conventions rather than dangers.

What is genuinely reassuring

• Street crime is rare. Residents routinely leave phones on café tables. Walking alone after dark is normal in almost every district, including Deira.
• The Metro has a women-and-children carriage — the section behind Gold Class. It is quieter at peak times and men entering it are fined.
• Taxis are metered, tracked and regulated, the airport rank is supervised around the clock, and there is a women-driver option (the pink-roofed taxis).
• Hotels are used to solo travellers. Nobody will ask why you are alone.

Conventions worth knowing

• Cover shoulders and knees in the souks, older residential districts and any mosque. In malls, hotels and on the beach, normal summer clothing is fine — see what to wear in Dubai.
• Swimwear stays on the beach. Walking through a mall in a bikini is an actual offence.
• Photographing people without permission — women and families especially — is taken seriously here. That protects you as much as anyone.
• Some beaches and pools have women-only days. Check the signage; they are well used.

The practical shape of a solo trip

Stay near the Metro — Downtown, Business Bay, Bur Dubai or the Marina — and you will barely need a taxi. Old Dubai is best in the morning; the Marina and JBR promenades are busy and pleasant well into the evening. Solo dining is unremarkable everywhere, though brunch is built around groups and works better with company.

The real hazard

Heat, not people. Between June and September the afternoon reaches 40–45°C and dehydration starts before you feel thirsty. Carry water everywhere.
