Is Dubai safe?

Yes — exceptionally so, by the measure most visitors mean. Street crime in Dubai is very low, walking alone at night is ordinary in almost every district, and the things that actually get visitors into trouble here are not crimes they were worried about.

What “safe” means in practice

• Street crime is rare. Pickpocketing and mugging are uncommon enough that residents routinely leave phones on café tables.
• Walking at night is normal, in almost any district — including Deira, which is dense, busy and worn in places, and not dangerous.
• Taxis are metered, tracked and regulated. The airport rank is supervised and staffed around the clock. Taking one alone at night is unremarkable.
• Malls have organised lost-child procedures, which is a small thing until you need it.

Where visitors actually get into trouble

Not through crime against them — through public behaviour rules that are stricter than most arrivals expect and are genuinely enforced:

• Public displays of affection beyond hand-holding
• Swearing and rude gestures, including in traffic
• Drinking in public, or being visibly drunk in public. Alcohol is legal in licensed hotels, bars and restaurants; the street is not one of them.
• Photographing people without permission — women and families especially — and photographing government buildings, military sites, ports or airports
• Swimwear away from the beach. Walking through a mall in a bikini is an actual offence.

This is the one area where visitors underestimate the difference between Dubai and home.

Is it safe for women travelling alone?

By the usual measures, yes, and it is a common choice. The Metro has a designated women-and-children carriage, which is quieter at peak times. Taxis have a women-driver option. Normal precautions apply and little beyond them.

Is it safe for children?

The genuine risk nobody mentions
