Masafi Fort
About Masafi Fort
Masafi Fort stands on a small, low hill in the Masafi area, about 30 km from Fujairah city, at a point that historically linked Fujairah with the other emirates. Fujairah Tourism states that the fort is believed to date to the 18th century and was built of mud, stone and sarooj mortar on a square plan, with a single circular tower at its south-western corner; the surviving tower stands about 8.8 metres high with an internal diameter of 5 metres. Rooms from different periods line the courtyard. Beneath the fort run Iron Age aflaj water channels that extend for several kilometres and irrigated farms in the area. The remains of a rectangular mosque with a mihrab lie on flat land north of the hill. Excavations were carried out in 2006 with a Japanese archaeological mission, and the site was restored between 2009 and 2012.
