What is Dubai like during Ramadan?

Quieter by day and busier by night than at any other time of year. Ramadan is not a reason to avoid Dubai — but arriving without knowing it is happening will confuse the first two days of your trip.

When it falls

Ramadan moves roughly eleven days earlier each year against the Gregorian calendar, so the dates shift. Check before you book — see the best time to visit Dubai.

What changes during daylight

• No eating, drinking or smoking in public during daylight hours. This applies to visitors too. Hotels keep areas open for guests, and you will not go hungry — but doing it in the street is not acceptable.
• Many restaurants close until sunset. Cafeterias and food courts often shut or serve takeaway only.
• Shorter working hours across offices and some attractions.
• Brunch pauses. The Saturday institution stops for the month — see how brunch works.
• Live music and nightlife are limited, and alcohol service is discreet where it continues at all.
• Dress a little more conservatively in public during the day. Not a legal requirement in tourist areas, but noticed and appreciated.

What it gives you instead

Iftar, the meal at sunset, is one of the genuinely good things in the Dubai calendar. Hotels and restaurants run iftar buffets that are often better value than the brunches they replace, and the whole city eats at the same moment. The atmosphere afterwards, until very late, is the best version of Dubai’s night.

Hotel rates are usually lower, and the malls stay open very late.

Should you come during Ramadan?

If your trip is built around beaches, evenings and food, yes — with the day planned around the pause. If it is built around bars and daytime restaurant meals, choose another month.
