Are Dubai beaches free?

Yes — every public beach in Dubai is free, and they are clean, properly maintained, and come with showers, changing rooms and lifeguards. That is not true of most beach cities, and it is one of the genuinely good things about this one.

The free ones

• Kite Beach — the best equipped. Showers, changing rooms, a 14 km running track, volleyball, watersports and a strip of food trucks behind it. Burj Al Arab sits in the background of every photograph.
• JBR — The Beach — wide sand backed by an open-air mall and a long promenade. Busiest after sunset.
• Sunset Beach, Umm Suqeim — the classic Burj Al Arab shot, quieter, with a designated surfing area when there is swell.
• La Mer — developed, shaded, with restaurants and a water park around it. The beach is free; everything else is not.
• Black Palace Beach — undeveloped, no facilities at all. Bring everything, take everything away.

The ones that are not quite free

Al Mamzar Beach Park in Deira charges a few dirhams to enter, and is worth it: several beaches, lawns, barbecue areas and pools. This is where Dubai families actually spend their weekends.

Beach clubs sitting on the same sand charge AED 150–500 for a day pass. What you get is a sunbed, a towel, a pool and table service — not a better beach. The water is the same water.

What to know before you go

• Swimwear on the sand only. Cover up when you leave — walking through a mall in a bikini is an actual offence.
• Between June and September the sand is too hot to walk on barefoot until early evening, and the sea itself reaches about 35°C in August — warm rather than refreshing.
• Flags are enforced. Green safe, yellow caution, red no swimming.
• No alcohol on public beaches.
