About Wadi Shawka

Wadi Shawka is a valley in the Hajar Mountains of Ras Al Khaimah, known for the Shawka dam and its mountain trails. Visit Ras Al Khaimah, the emirate’s official tourism site, describes it as a free public area for hikers, mountain bikers, campers and families on a day out, open all year.

What you will find

The name translates as “powerful valley”. The wadi is a seasonal river bed: after rain over the mountains, natural pools can form, mostly in winter. It runs from the village of Khari, north of Shawka village, to join Wadi Esfai and Wadi Ejili. Abandoned old settlements and modern farms can be seen along the way. The dam was built in 2001 on the instruction of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

Near the dam there is a recreation area with barbecue areas, a children’s play area, shaded seating, restrooms and parking. There are a few small shops with basic supplies at the entrance, but the tourism authority advises bringing your own food, water and gear.

Trails

Trail type Length Time
Beginner loops about 3–5 km 1.5–2 hours
Longer, moderate routes about 10 km up to 6 hours or more

The shale rock makes the ground uneven. The area is also used for mountain biking, running, off-roading and free camping. Local tour operators run guided hikes, and the tourism site recommends a guide for new hikers.

Getting there

  • From Ras Al Khaimah city (about 95 km): take the Al Manama – Ras Al Khaimah road (E18) to the E88 crossing, turn right, then take the first left just before the ADNOC station and follow the signs.
  • From Dubai (about 92 km): take the Dubai–Sharjah highway (E102) and turn left at the Shawka intersection.

Good to know

  • The tourism authority recommends visiting between November and April, when it is cooler.
  • Check the weather first; wadis are prone to flash floods during heavy rain.
  • Wear hiking shoes, carry enough water and sun protection, start early, and tell someone before a long hike.
  • In an emergency call 999 (police) or 998 (ambulance).
  • If you camp, take all your rubbish with you.
