Kalba Bird of Prey Centre
About Kalba Bird of Prey Centre
Kalba Bird of Prey Centre is a Sharjah wildlife centre for falcons, eagles, owls, vultures and other raptors, in the Khor Kalba nature reserve on the emirate’s east coast. It is for families, school groups and anyone curious about the region’s birds of prey and the tradition of falconry.
What you can see
Visit Sharjah, the emirate’s official tourism site, describes free-flying demonstrations and aviaries housing owls, eagles, buzzards, vultures and falcons. Its Arabic page says the centre is home to 46 species of birds of prey.
The centre covers both resident and migrating raptors. Species named by Visit Sharjah include:
- the falcon, the national bird of the UAE (resident);
- the barn owl;
- the short-toed snake eagle;
- the greater spotted eagle;
- the lappet-faced vulture.
Shows and tours
According to the Arabic page, the keepers run an hour-long show in the outdoor arena twice a day, and visitors can see the birds close up on a behind-the-scenes tour of the centre. Show times and tour booking details are not published on the page, so ask the centre before you travel.
Getting there
The centre is in Kalba, on Sharjah’s east coast, close to Al Hefaiyah Mountain Conservation Centre. Visit Sharjah lists both, together with the Khor Kalba Mangrove Centre, among the nature sites in the Kalba area, so the centres can be combined in one trip.
