About Rare Books, Manuscripts & Prints Museum
Choose maps, manuscripts or the history of printing
Rare Books, Manuscripts and Prints is a department of the Crossroads of Civilizations Museum group in Dubai. It gives a specialist focus to a cultural visit: how people recorded, copied and circulated knowledge. A catalogue description is not the same thing as permission to use the object as a library book.
Compare three forms: a handwritten manuscript, a printed edition and a facsimile. They can carry related text while being different physical evidence. Ask when the displayed copy was made and whose words it contains; the date of a manuscript copy does not automatically date the author’s life.
Use a small reading question rather than a list of rarities
The operator lists a 1590 Gasparo Balbi travel edition and geographical material including Description of Egypt. A visitor interested in maps can ask which names or boundaries the maker chose to show. Someone interested in science can compare a diagram with its surrounding text. There is no need to repeat an unverified world’s-first or oldest claim to make those questions worthwhile.
With children, choose a map symbol or a page layout to explain. Do not promise turning fragile original pages, touching exhibits, using flash or handling manuscripts. Public gallery viewing and a research appointment have different conditions; this review has not arranged either.
Check group admission rather than adding a second ticket
The central English Visit page displays AED 25 per person with children under 7 admitted free, while other language blocks show AED 30. Translated blocks describe three-museum coverage, whereas the English fee block does not state the same inclusion. Confirm the current ticket before assuming a separate Rare Books charge or automatic inclusion. For two visitors both charged the English rate, AED 50 is product arithmetic only; confirm that product actually covers the intended galleries.
The group also publishes conflicting clocks: English 9 am–8 pm all days versus other 8 am–8 pm Saturday–Thursday and Friday closure. Keep Friday and the opening edge unresolved rather than creating a new schedule for this department.
The shared visitor contact is +97143934440 and [email protected]. Start with the specialist department you want to see, then decide whether a wider collection route adds value. No guaranteed guide, library session or access to every listed rare work is claimed.
For the wider collection, compare Crossroads of Civilizations Museum.
