Questions & Answers

What days are the weekend in Dubai?

Saturday and Sunday since 2022 — not Friday and Saturday. Friday is a half working day with a long midday break, and Saturday is the busiest day everywhere.

Saturday and Sunday — not Friday and Saturday. The UAE changed its working week in 2022, and a great deal of older travel writing still has it wrong, which is why so many visitors arrive expecting the wrong days to be quiet.

The working week now

  • Monday to Thursday — full working days
  • Friday — a half working day for most of the public sector, with a long midday break for prayers
  • Saturday and Sunday — the weekend

What this changes for a visitor

Friday afternoon is the pause. Some offices, government services and smaller businesses close from around midday for prayers and do not reopen. Malls, restaurants and attractions stay open, but if you need a bank, a clinic or a government counter, do not plan it for Friday afternoon.

Saturday is the busy day. It is when Dubai brunches, when the beaches fill, when Global Village and Miracle Garden are at their most crowded, and when the car parks at the big attractions can cost you an hour. If your dates are flexible within a week, mid-week is calmer everywhere and often cheaper.

Sunday evening feels like a Sunday evening anywhere — quieter, with the city resetting for Monday.

Prayer times

Shops and restaurants may pause briefly at prayer times throughout the week, and more noticeably at Friday midday. It is a short interruption, not a closure.

The practical advice

Put the crowded outdoor things — the souks, the free attractions, the beaches — on a weekday morning, and use Saturday for something indoors or something you have booked a timed ticket for.

The seasonal picture is in the best time to visit Dubai, and the rest of what surprises first-timers is in first time in Dubai.
